Garda work forced group to move North

A SERIES of garda successes against dissident republican group Oglaigh na hEireann over the past seven months forced the terrorist group to move its bomb manufacturing base into Northern Ireland.
A massive investment of garda resources in intelligence gathering and surveillance on known members of the dissident group, yielded dividends on a grand scale for gardai and foiled several bombing attempts against targets in the North and in Britain.
The group's power base has been in the north Louth - south Armagh area since its formation following the split at a Provisional IRA army convention in Donegal last October.
As its leader, the former provisional quartermaster general was living in north Louth, along with many of his closest supporters, it was decided initially to site its bomb manufacturing operations on this side of the Border.
Its most experienced technical expert, the former head of the IRA's engineering unit, also lives in Dublin's Inchicore and stays well away from the scene of the crimes he helps to set up.
But dedicated garda work, involving its main anti-terrorist group, the Emergency Response Unit, the national surveillance unit other key special branch sections and local gardai ensured detectives were able to penetrate the terrorist network.
