Dublin's archbishop describes carnage as 'sadistic'
ARCHBISHOP of Dublin Dr Desmond Connell last night described the Omagh outrage as the work of sadists.
"I wish to convey my horror at the sadistic attack on the people of Omagh," he said. "May God grant the fullness of eternal life to all who have been robbed of the gift of life, healing to those who have been cruelly injured and comfort to the bereaved and distressed."
The Archbishop yesterday contacted the Bishop of Derry Dr Seamus Hegarty to convey his heartfelt sympathy and the assurance of prayers for all those involved. And books of condolence for victims will be opened at Dublin's Mansion House from midday today.
Dublin's Lord Mayor Senator Joe Doyle, who visited the scene of the atrocity yesterday, expressed his his "absolute revulsion" at the evil which caused so much devastation to the people of Omagh.
MEMORIAL
A memorial service for the victims will be held in Dublin's St Patrick's Cathedral on Sunday at 3.15pm.
In Omagh's Presbyterian Church yesterday, worshippers sang "Be Still My Soul as clergymen compared the suffering of Omagh to the pain inflicted on Jesus by evil men.
A hushed church heard the Moderator of the Presbyterian church in Ireland, the Rt Rev John Dixon, speak of the "frustration, anger, and upset and stunned disbelief" and experienced by people.
And he led the min prayer that the government may "truly be a terror to those who plan evil and the comfort to those who keep to the law."
