Motorist killed as ambulance collides with car
THE BOMB claimed - another victim yesterday when a motorist was fatally injured in a Belfast road accident.
An ambulance transferring one of the people injured in the blast from Omagh to the Ulster Hospital at Dundonald was involved in a collision with a car on the Knock Road.
The car driver died as result of the crash and a number of passengers were injured but were said to be stable in hospital.
Police named the dead man last night as Gary White, who was in his late 30s and came from Lansdowne Road, Newtownards, Co.Down.
Some 23 patients, two children, the youngster a girl aged nine, were being treated last night at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.
The most critically wounded had been taken by helicopter in a series of airlifts to the west Belfast Hospital. Hospital chaplins attempted to comfort relatives of the injured. Catholic priest, Fr. Paul Byrne said quite often the best they could do was to listen to relatives worries and fears.
The Bishop of Down and Connor Patrick Walsh visited the hospital in the afternoon. He said: "I have seen some appalling injuries. It has been very harrowing. Words could not describe the horror of it. A hospital spokesman said: "most of the patients we received will be disabled in some way, some very disabled.
It was revealed last night that the Royal hospital received scores of phone calls from people in the republic offering to donate blood while Dublin based nurses have been offering their services to deal with the injured.
