Omagh service an inspiration to everyone - Doherty
SINN Fein Vice-President, Pat Doherty, condemned the perpetrators of the Omagh massacre, and promised that his party would redouble their efforts to reach a political settlement, when he met British Prime Minister, Mr Tony Blair in Belfast on Tuesday.
"I want to state clearly that organisations such as the one which carried out this action, do not share the republican beliefs to which Sinn Fein aspire. Their reprehensible actions are targetted solely at ending the peace process which has been built so painstakingly over recent years," he said.
Mr Doherty added the quiet determined nobility and insistence of the people in Omagh at Saturday's Reflection Service, was an inspiration to all political leaders to work at the peace process and build on the Good Friday Agreement.
Meanwhile in Ballina, Taoiseach, Mr Bertie Ahern told the Humbert Summer School on Friday last that as a responsible democratic government, he and his colleagues had responded decisively to the security and political challenge represented by the Omagh outrage.
"The government have been resolute this week in defence of democracy. The decisions we announced on Wednesday as to security and legislative measures can leave no doubt that we are determined to crush violence and to suppress those who perpetrate it.
"We shall not hesitate to use the powers vested in us in all their plenitude to defend peace and democracy on this island against any who may persist in defying the will of the people of Ireland," he said.
Mr Ahern said his heart went out to the grief stricken families burying their loved ones, to all those maimed and injured and to all the relatives, friends and communities of all those effected by this evil act.
