People of Letterkenny offer sympathy to victims
A BOOK of Condolence was opened at the County Library in Letterkenny on Tuesday afternoon to give local people the chance to offer their sympathy to the victims of the Omagh bombing.
The book of condolences was opened by the Chairman of Letterkenny Urban District Council, Cllr P.J. Blake, following an short ecumenical service conducted by Fr Gerard Cunningham and Rev Stuart Wright.
"The book gives the people of Letterkenny the opportunity to show their sympathy and offer their support for the families of the bereaved in Buncrana, County Tyrone and Spain. At this time we would also like to wish a full and speedy recovery to those people injured in the bomb," Cllr Blake said.
Mr Pat Byrne, President of Letterkenny Chamber of Commerce, Mr Jim McCormick, Chairman of the local Tidy Towns Committee, Mrs May McClintock, An Taisce, Town Clerk, Mr Peter Coyle and members of the Urban District Council were also present at the County Library on Tuesday.
Letterkenny had been celebrating its annual Festival when the Omagh bombing was carried out on Saturday afternoon.
A minute's silence was observed during the Festival concert on Saturday night while the final day's festival events on Sunday were cancelled by the organisers of the Festival as a mark of respect.
"People in Letterkenny were stunned over the tragedy and we took the decision to cancel the Carnival Parade on Sunday afternoon and the events later that evening," Mr Gary Cooney, Festival Director said.
Local discos observed a minute's silence on Saturday night while a minute's silence was also observed before various sporting occasions throughout the county on Sunday.
The League Cup tie between Finn Harps and Derry City, scheduled to take place on Wednesday night, was also called off as a mark of respect.
