OMAGH DEAD REMEMBERED IN FATIMA
Omagh dead remembered in Fatima
A group of pilgrims from the North of Ireland, who arrived at the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima, just as the terrible news of the Omagh bombing was coming through on Portuguese television, have returned home with a statue of Our Lady of Fatima, which will be donated as a memorial to the victims. On the day after their arrival, the dead and injured were prayed for by the thousands of pilgrims from all over the world, gathered in the huge Sanctuary Square for the Sunday International Concelebrated Mass. That evening, Fr. Hugh O'Kane, SMA, Randalstown, Co. Antrim, Spiritual Director to the Group, who said the English decade of the multi-language rosary at the Chapel of the Apparitions, asked the huge crowd present for the nightly candlelit procession to join him in prayers for those who had been killed and injured.
When Portuguese television highlighted the funeral of the three Buncrana boys, Oran Doherty, James Barker, and Sean McLaughlin, the group decided to get together and buy a statue of Our Lady of Fatimia, to be brought back to Buncrana by two pilgrims in the group from that town. Brother Liam Doherty. currently Superior, Marist Brothers Residence, Athlone; and his sister, Josephine. The statue will be presented on behalf of the group to the Parish Priest of St. Mary's, Fr. Joe Carolan, as a memorial and expression of sympathy.
