Doherty condemns Omagh bombers
Sinn Fein Vice President, Pat Doherty, has said that organisations such as the one responsible for the recent bombing of Omagh do not share the republican beliefs to which Sinn Fein aspire.
Speaking after the Sinn Fein delegation, of which he was a member, met Tony Blair in Belfast on Tuesday, Mr. Doherty added that the reprehensible actions of such organisations are "targeted solely at ending the peace process which has been built so painstakingly over recent years". "On Saturday the people of Ireland grieved as one with of the Omagh bomb. All over Ireland we remembered with heavy hearts those who were killed and injured. Standing in Omagh on Saturday afternoon, I was humbled at the enormous dignity and courage displayed by the bereaved and injured as well as the people of the town. Their quiet but determined nobility and insistence that political leaders continue to work at the peace process and to build on the Good Friday Agreement was a source of inspiration to all who watched and listened," he stated.
Mr. Doherty maintained that it is now incumbent on those in political leadership to demonstrate to all the people of Ireland, and particularly to those who suffered so much through bereavement and injury in Omagh, that efforts are redoubled so that a political settlement of the conflict can be reached. Commenting on the new legal measures to be introduced by the Irish Government in an effort to eradicate paramilitary groups, the Sinn Fein Vice President said: "While the desire for a tough security response to Saturday's bomb in Omagh is understandable at human level, we believe that the priority must now be to strengthen the peace process and ensure that the Belfast Agreement is delivered in full. It is this which will best ensure that the tragedies such as that which occurred in Omagh never happens again."
