Donegal registered car used in bomb
The car used in Saturday's horrific bomb attack on the centre of Omagh was a Donegal registered Cavalier stolen in Carrickmacross on Thursday last. The maroon Vauxhall car bore the registration number 91 DL 2554 at the time of the theft. However, police believe it may have been fitted with false plates before the bomb attack. At the time of the explosion, the car may have carried the number MDZ 5211 and Gardai and the RUC have appealed for information from anyone who may have seen the car bearing either registration.
Chief Superintendent Colm Rooney said that if people with information don't come forward they were, by their silence, responsible for the deaths and atrocities that took place in Omagh. The car was stolen from outside a house in the residential area of St. Macartans Villas. The owner, who was visiting friends, left the car outside at 11pm. and discovered it missing at around 330 a.m. the following morning when he reported it to the local Garda Station. Both Donegal plates on the car had the IRL crest on the right hand corner, while the car also had a distinctive Aer Lingus staff car badge on the windscreen and a telescopic aerial on the rear passenger side. "I have no doubt that there are people in the border region who have good quality information on the activities of these people and I am appealing for them to come forward," Chief Superintendent Rooney said.
