We must catch these 'vermin' was the initial reaction of the Minister for Tourism, Sports and Recreation, Dr James McDaid T.D. on hearing of the atrocity and in particular, the loss of life on this side of the border.' The Minister was in Cairo and other pans of Europe on promotional work when he heard about the bombing at approximately 7pm.
"I was watching CNN news when the word came through that there had been a bombing in Omagh. Like everyone else I was devastated about the whole matter,' he said.
He said he was on the phone back and forth trying to find information to see if anyone he knew had been involved in the blast.
Adding that County Donegal had always had an affinity with Omagh, he said he was particularly saddened to hear about the news of the three young boys from nearby Buncrana.
He asked what kind of person could kill so many others including women and children and reiterated the Taoiseach's pledge to crush what he described as 'Vermin'.
"We know who these people are and I am sure that the Taoiseach will do all in his powers to implement the present legislation to track the people who committed this atrocity down.
"If we are honest we all feel a great sense of anger at these people, who are no more than fifty to one hundred. We must crush them and do something about this once and for all,' he said.
Dr. McDaid finished by expressing sympathy to all those who lost loved ones or knew people who were injured as a result of the callous attack.
