Why Omagh won't learn the truth
The Omagh relatives are not the first, nor will they be the last, to find themselves wondering just why their loved ones died and whether those deaths could have been prevented.
The Government has announced that it is to hold an inquiry into who knew what about the bombing and the bombers and at what stage they gained that information. It will also look at whether the information was shared between the intelligence services, the RUC and detectives hunting for the bombers.
And what will come out of the inquiry? Probably very little. The spooks will have some good reasons prepared for not sharing information with the RUC or else the waters will be so muddied that no one will know who knew what.
Of course, claims that the security services and the security forces failed to act on information which could have saved lives during the Northern Ireland Troubles are nothing new.
Indeed, even police officers were allowed to die to protect informers, according to some of the claims made over the years.
That is why you will never see a British government calling for a truth and reconciliation process in Northern Ireland. It, or its agents, have too much to hide.
