McGuinness in call for fresh probe
THE Deputy First Minister used the 10th anniversary of the Omagh bomb to call for a new inquiry into the atrocity.
Martin McGuinness backed families calling for a fresh probe into the attack. No one has been found guilty of planting the 5001b car bomb which decimated Omagh town centre on August 15,1998.
Speaking immediately after the ceremony to mark a decade since the massacre, he gave the clearest signal that justice could yet be served when he voiced the need for a fresh cross-border investigation to catch the bombers.
He said: "I have very serious concerns about the way the police have handled this situation from beginning to end and that is why my position is to support the calls made by families here for the establishment of another independent tribunal.
"They obviously have lost all faith in the police investigation in which we have seen debacle after debacle.
"What we have to do is support the families in the demands they are making.
"I have listened to what the people in Omagh have said and the criticisms that have been made. Spokespeople have talked about their lack of faith in the police and political institutions and have demanded a tribunal of enquiry into the events in Omagh."
