A DAY OF INFAMY
AUGUST 15, 1998, is a day which will go down in infamy as one the bloodiest in Northern Ireland's turbulent history.
It was a day when 29 innocent people and two unborn babies were senselessly slaughtered in the Omagh bombing, signalling a terrifying and disturbing new low for the actions of republican terrorists bent on furthering their cause.
Shockwaves from the atrocity were felt around the world as footage of the aftermath was relayed, showing the full horror of what unfolded in the Co Tyrone town on that tragic day. As blame and recriminations began to fly, heartbreaking stories surrounding the victims, their families and those maimed or injured in the blast began to filter through as the death toll continued to mount.
As Ulster reeled from the indiscriminate attack, relatives of the victims began to come to terms with what had been snatched from them on that fateful day. What offered comfort in those early days of grief was the swift action of the RUC as they underlined their determination to bring those responsible to justice.
Three-and-a-half years on their trauma has been eased little and their sense of injustice grows with every passing day the perpetrators remain free men.
