RESPONSE COST MUST BE EXAMINED

Response cost 'must be examined'
By Chris Thornton

THE Policing Board has been urged to look at the cost of today's Chief Constable's rebuttal to the Police Ombudsman's Omagh report.
The Committee on the Administration of Justice said it was concerned about reports that twelve Police Service officers were devoted to working on the response. The Belfast-based human rights organisation said it considered "this a misuse of public monies."
"The Police Board should request an immediate report on the cost of this exercise," the group said.
"The ombudsman's office is independent and the PSNI should accept the criticisms made and reform its practices. If this had been done in the past, many subsequent criticisms of the police would have been avoided."
