Garda now 'on trial'
GARDA last night launched a criminal investigation after two of their detectives were branded "discredited witnesses" by the judge at the trail of Colin Murphy, convicted of conspiracy to cause the Omagh bomb outrage. The move followed the revelation during the trial that notes of an interrogation session with Murphy had been falsified. Mr Justice Robert Barr, President of the no-jury anti-terrorist Special Criminal Court in Dublin ruled that the evidence presented by the detectives was "entirely inadmissible". The inquiry will be headed by Detective Superintendent Cor-mac Gordon. On its completion a file will be submitted to the Irish Director of Public Prosecutions for a decision on possible criminal charges. In his 75-minute long verdict, Mr Justice Barr made it clear that while the detectives' evidence was discredited, it had not affected evidence from any other police officers in the trial.
