What the papers said today

AS the war of words over the report into Omagh bomb investigation rumbled on today, local and national Press said it was time to concentrate on the real victims- the families of the bereaved. While the Mirror's editorial admitted it may have been necessary to probe the way in which the RUC handled their intelligence sources, it stressed the families were now victims once again.
"This time they are caught up in the fallout of a blazing, merciless and very visible row between two servants of the public," it read.
In its editorial, the Irish Times said the first essential step now was to move on the Ombudsman's recommendations that an independent team
should take over the investigation into the Omagh bomb. The Irish Independent said that at this time the thoughts and sympathy of all reasonable people should be with the relatives of victims and survivors of the bomb. The Irish News carried the headline "Collision Course".
Focusing on Special Branch, it said there was an urgent need for "some form of truth and reconciliation commission through which republicans and loyalists could make full disclosure." The News Letter's front page was devoted to the Chief Constable's pledge to clear his name and said not only was the reputation of the RUC at stake but also the credibility of the Ombudsman's office.
