Federation unhappy with draft document

THE organisation representing rank-and-file police officers is today calling on Ombudsman Nuala O'Loan to "consider her position" over the draft Omagh report. In a strongly-worded comment, the Police Federation for Northern Ireland said its members' confidence in Mrs O'Loan's office was being eroded. A spokesman said : "Her report is not based on anything which could properly be called evidence. The allegations which she makes were not put to the officers concerned, in flagrant breach of their human rights."
Her knowledge of the handling of intelligence and the realities of policing in Northern Ireland was "simplistic in the extreme", said the Federation. "She appears to have forgotten that police officers also suffered in the Omagh tragedy," the spokesman claimed.
The Federation said the report would add to the sense of hurt felt by the people of Omagh and give comfort to those who sought to blame the police".
