We cannot be manipulated
THE evil that was done in Omagh, has caused some good people to question the value of voting Yes in the recent referendum.
I would appeal to such people to reflect carefully when they can bring themselves to do so. For behind that bloody atrocity, there was a sick and cynical political purpose - to smash the Good Friday Agreement.
The Real IRA, who voted No now seek to bomb us out of our democratic decision. Their objective is to wreck any progress toward peace; and to destroy that cross-community agreement essential to the building of a new and better society.
There is only one way they can do this - a way both well-proven and ancient. It is to provoke violence and counter-violence; to stir up sectarian hatred; to create confusion and bitterness; and to deflect good people from their better judgment.
We, therefore, must not allow ourselves to fall into this evil and fascist trap. Instead, we must hold our nerve, maintain the rightness of our principles, and defend the democratic decision taken by the vast majority of all our people.
We must resist this attempt to manipulate us. Peace was never going to be easy. It will require courage, intelligence and steely determination on the part of us all, citizens and government alike, to reject and repel this evil, and to win through.
