NOT SURPRISED BY BOMBING MENTALITY

Not surprised by bombing mentality

LIKE Lindy McDowell (Belfast Telegraph, August 22) I utterly abhor the mind-set that can bring people to plant bombs which, whatever the intentions, can result in the sort of slaughter we saw at Omagh. Unlike Ms McDowell, however, I am not surprised at the existence of. the bombing mentality.
Indeed, given that the nations of capitalism spend billions training and equipping armed forces for slaughtering innocent people and that some of these forces are plying their foul trade every single day, it is inevitable that the culture of violence thus created will be exploited by ruthless people who see violence as a short-cut to political power.
The Socialist Party has, since its foundation in 1904, consistently opposed violence. During the two world wars our members have undergone persecution and prosecution because they refused to partake in the, killing of their fellow-members of the working class. We have no record of a single journalist praising our steadfast rejection of violence.
R. MONTAGUE,
Media Secretary, Socialist Party, Belfast.
