Peace 'greatest gift for 2000'
THE greatest gift Ireland could give to the new millennium and the people who died in the terrorist bombing at Omagh would be the achievement of total peace, said Irish President Mary McAleese.
At a function during a visit to Australia, she said the achievement of peace was something that had defeated many generations of Irish people but was now achievable.
She said the Omagh bombing, which killed 29 people and injured more than 200, was a very big test of the commitment to the Good Friday Agreement.
"We are now very close to achieving the golden circle, the circle that will bring upon Ireland in the next millennium, a golden age the likes of which our people have never experienced before," Mrs McAleese said in Brisbane.
"We will have a peace that speaks to the world of a people who have turned away from a culture of conflict and who have determined in each individual heart that they will build a culture of consensus.
