Bishop calls for lasting peace

A CHURCH of Ireland bishop made an impassioned plea for permanent peace on the anniversary of the Omagh bomb yesterday.
Dr James Mehaffey said no other monument would suffice without an end to all violence.
"We acknowledge that they need a permanent memorial, a memorial not so much of bricks and mortar but by an end to violence, by the establishment of lasting peace," said the bishop.
From the first rays of the new day's light, people were visiting the memorial garden and many walked away from it in tears.
As hundreds of worshippers walked to the morning service at the Church of Ireland Church of St Columba's and the nearby Roman Catholic Sacred Heart Church, two showed their anger at the media intrusion on the town's grief.
"You would think you people had better things to do than stand here on a Sunday morning," shouted one man leading two children by the hand into Sacred Heart Church.
