Dream which inspired Omagh bride

WHEN young bride Kate Kelly walks down the aisle in eight weeks time, she will be taking steps she once thought she would never take.
Kate (27) from Lammy Crescent, Omagh, suffered a severe leg injury in the Omagh bomb. Her wounds were so bad, her wedding to Brian Mulcahy, also 27, had to be postponed. At one stage medical staff gave her only a 50% chance of walking again.
But today - almost a year to the day since the atrocity - Kate is very optimistic of fulfilling her dream.
Since the bomb, she has undergone many operations and a gruelling round of physiotherapy.
"I want to be like any other bride and walk down the aisle to be by my groom," she said.
"This is the wedding that nearly didn't happen, so we have put an enormous amount of planning and preparation into it.
''When I think about my wedding now, I feel tears. It's not because we had to cancel last year's plans, but because of all we've gone through within the past year. "I believe we can now overcome any obstacle."
Kate suffered horrific injuries when a six inch sliver of twisted metal pierced her thigh severing the sciatic nerve. Her lower leg was also severely burned. She underwent emergency nerve graft surgery and has since undergone intense physiotherapy.
In recent weeks she has experienced mild feeling in her foot and has stepped up the physiotherapy.
As the town prepares to mark the first anniversary of the bomb which killed 29 people, the proceeds of a tribute album for the victims were today handed over to the Omagh fund. Across The Bridge Of Hope, which featured U2 ana Sinead O'Connor, has raised £200,000 to date.
So far the Omagh bomb fund has passed the £5m mark and today the trustees set a final target of £6m which they hope to reach within 12 months. The town will come to a halt this weekend to formally remember the victims.
