Omagh to stop for silent memorial
Town is set to come to a standstill

THE centre of Omagh will come to a standstill at 2.55pm on August 15, to allow people gather to remember those killed and injured in last year's bomb, it emerged today. Exactly one year after the Real IRA car bomb ripped through the Tyrone town, thousands of people will attend a memorial ceremony in front of Omagh Courthouse.
A simultaneous ceremony will be held in Buncrana, in memory of the three young boys and two Spanish visitors to the Co Donegal town, who died in the bombing. Market Street in Omagh, where the huge car bomb exploded, will close to traffic on Friday August 13.
And the following day shops in the town will shut their doors for one hour before an Anniversary Mass is held at the Sacred Heart Church.
The commemoration is being organised by a number of groups in Omagh, including the Sperrin Lakeland Trust, Omagh District Council and the Churches Forum.
Chief Executive of Omagh District Council John McKinney, said it was important to mark the first anniversary with a ceremony.
"It will be a very difficult time for the town, but it is only right that we commerorate what happened," he said.
About 50,000 people attended the rememberance service held one week after the bombing last year.
And many thousands are again expected to return to pay their respects to the 29 dead and hundreds injured and bereaved in the atrocity.
