Omagh council chief is given the OBE
THE chief executive of Omagh District Council was today recognised for his services to his community in the aftermath of the province's worst ever terrorist atrocity.
John McKinney was awarded the OBE for community leadership.
Mr McKinney was on hand in the days and weeks following the August 15 bomb which killed 29 people.
Today he said he had been put in a position that no community leader ever wanted to experience in the wake of the atrocity.
"This would not have been possible without the support of my staff and the whole community," he said today.
"And I suppose I am proud to be in a position to lead the community. My life-long involvement has been in community development and I do feel this award is in recognition of the community.
"At this time, the bereaved and the injured of Omagh are very much in my mind.
"My hopes for 1999 are to continue the re-building of Omagh both at community and at local infrastructure level.
"There is also the hope that Omagh will be the catalyst for peace and we can move forward."
