Sinead records song of hope
SINEAD O'Connor is the latest pop star backing Northern Ireland's hopes for peace in the wake of the Omagh bombing.
Charity album Across The Bridge Of Hope will raise money for the victims of the August tragedy and look forward to a time when there will be no more atrocities.
Sinead has recorded an entirely new version of Abba's Chiquitita for the album and shot a video to promote it yesterday.
She said: "Abba actually wrote it for Unicef - they own the publishing rights - so it was always dedicated to children.
"It's about talking to a child or young person when something terrible has happened to them and reassuring them that it is not all darkness and despair - it is quite a mothering song."
Sinead, who also recorded a song for the successful Help! album for War Child three years ago, was asked to contribute her version of Chiquitita by the charity album organisers.
She said she felt hopeful the Omagh bomb could be Northern Ireland's final tragedy because the public had shown their abhorrence so strongly.
"People were so appalled by it, especially after the Referendum.
"It was against the people's desire for peace.
"It's possible people have taken power back into their own hands and the terrorists are now the terrified," she said.
Rock stars from Ireland Van Morrison, The Corrs, Boyzone, U2, Ash and Enya have also donated tracks to the album, which is being rushed out later this month.
The Omagh Choir and Ulster Youth Orchestra also contribute, and actor Liam Neeson has read reconciliation poems by Seamus Heaney and 12-year-old victim of the bomb Sean McLaughlin, whose words give the album its title.
