FORMER PATIENTS HELPING VICTIMS
Former patients helping victims
OMAGH bomb victims who lost limbs were comforted by victims of previous terror attacks, it was revealed today.
Soon after the August blast, past patients contacted Musgrave Park Hospital to offer their help.
They travelled to hospitals throughout Ulster to give hope to the severely injured.
Consultant in rehabilitation medicine at Musgrave, Roger Parke, and members of the rehabilitation team also visited the injured soon after the blast.
They spoke to families about what the future held for their loved one who had lost a limb.
"Both Michelle and Suzanne were very positive from the beginning," Mr Parke said.
"I found them both to be very calm considering the dreadful experiences they had been through."
Michelle lost her right leg, just below her hip, around three weeks after the bombing. Suzanne's foot was blown off, which led to her limb being amputated below the knee.
A 12-year-old boy also lost his leg from below the knee.
A 19-year-old girl and a middle-aged woman, both injured in the bombing, will be having limbs fitted at the centre later this year.
Mr Parke said that the mental aspect of losing a limb is equally as important as the physical.
