BISHOP CALLS FOR PROOF WAR IS OVER

Bishop calls for proof the war is over

A CHURCH of Ireland Bishop today said there is a need for proof that "the war is over".
Bishop of Clogher, the Rt Rev Brian Hannon, also said there had been a different dimension to the revulsion of people over the Omagh bomb and the deaths of the Quinn brothers in Ballymoney.
Speaking at the diocesan synod in Enniskillen, he said the whole community had said "there must be an end to this".
Bishop Hannon said: "We still need proof that the war is at an end. We need genuinely to be builders with God and with our neighbours for the peace that we long for.
"We owe it to the many victims of our troubled years. It is when the "whole community reacts as one that the peace dividend begins to be seen."
He said there had never been such a combined governmental and worldwide commitment to support our new democratic will for peace.
"Now is the time for all those committed to democracy, justice and peace to see that it happens." he added.
This, he said, meant honouring agreements and pledges, providing information and taking the necessary actions to uncover arsenals and make murderers amenable to the law, and to stand together against terrorism "of word or deed".
