Commons questions

COMMONS leader Margaret Beckett is to be challenged over the "thousands upon thousands of pounds" wasted by the recall of Parliament earlier this
month to debate tough new laws on terrorism following the Omagh atrocity.
She is being asked why the major renovation work in the Com- mons chamber had to be stopped and the scaffolding removed just for a two-day sitting when MPs could easily have sat in the House of Lords -as happened during the last war.
Charles Kennedy, Liberal Democrat MP for Ross, Skye and In- verness West, said today: "I do wonder as to the necessity of dismantling the scaffolding and work under way in the Commons chamber itself for the occasion."
