Police chiefs meet to catch Omagh killers
A TOP level security summit has been held in Dublin attended by RUC Chief Constable Ronnie Flanagan and Scotland Yard's anti-terrorist chief, Assistant Commissioner David Veness, and chaired by Garda Commissioner Pat Byrne.
The three police chiefs agreed to pool resources to track down the terrorists who carried out the Omagh bombing.
The day long meeting also authorised joint action against the Real IRA.
The police chiefs carried out an assessment of the Real IRA's ceasefire declaration and agreed it should be treated with caution.
Garda Commissioner Byrne was accompanied by Deputy Commissioner Noel Conroy, in charge of Garda operations and Assistant Commissioner Pat O'Toole, the man responsible for crime and security.
They briefed the RUC Chief Constable and Scotland Yard's Assistant Commissioner on recent intelligence compiled by the gardai on the Real IRA and other republican dissidents.
The police chiefs were also briefed on garda investigations in the Republic into the Omagh bombing.
The security summit also discussed the implications of the new anti terrorist legislation recently enacted in Dublin and London in the wake of the Omagh bombing.
Meanwhile, a Dublin man being held under the terms of the new laws was still being questioned by detectives at Carrickmacross in Co
Monaghan today.
A decision will be taken later today on whether the man, from Donnycarney in Dublin, is to be charged. Detectives are understood to be probing the link between stolen vehicles and the Real IRA.
