Disgraced bishop met old friend from Omagh

DISGRACED Bishop Eamon Casey has made a secret journey to Ireland to visit a friend from Omagh, it emerged today.
The former bishop travelled to visit an old friend from the town shortly after the Omagh bombing last month.
The trip is believed to be Eamon Casey's first visit to Ireland since he returned to England from missionary work in south America.
Yesterday the former bishop, who left Ireland after admitting he was the father of a teenage son, announced he is retiring from public life.
In a brief statement issued through the Catholic Press Office in Dublin, he said;"I have left Ecuador after completing a five year contract with the Society of St James, Boston and I have resigned as a member of the Society.
"I am not seeking or accepting any public pastoral ministry in the Church in Ireland, England or elsewhere.
"I am living in England with relatives as I need some time to myself.
"I do not intend to give any interviews and I would ask that my privacy be respected."
The announcement ends speculation that Bishop Casey was about to take up a new post in England after his return from Ecuador.
The former Bishop of Galway, 71, flew to London from New York last month after working as a missionary in Ecuador.
Dr Casey resigned in disgrace as Bishop of Galway in 1992 after it was revealed he had an affair with American divorcee Annie Murphy while he was based in Co Kerry in the 70s.
His son Peter, now 23, still lives with his mother in the United States.
