Cocktail of arrogance and weasel words
EAMONN McCANN, without giving any evidence, believes that the bombers of Omagh did not mean to massacre (Belfast Telegraph, August 19). The bombers make the same claim.
Everybody else, on the clearest of evidence, believes differently, including the Taoiseach who writes on the same day and the same page as McCann that "excuses only added insult to the hurt", a most humane sentiment reflecting the feelings of most normal people.
Does this mean we are looking at some advanced fawning from Eamonn here, or mere dumb insolence?
What also struck me as derisive was his attempt to imply that the fascists at Omagh were "ordinary people" like you and me and that such sociopaths are "part of what we are .
I can only deduce that he means we are all as bad as the bombers and that for us to even presume to "distance ourselves" from them is only a "pretence" and a "furtive" one at that.
It's a long time since I have read such a twisted cocktail of arrogance and weasel words. What is pitiful is that he thinks it's an obituary.
