President Mary tells of regret
PRESIDENT Mary McAleese said during her official visit to Australia today that she was sorry she had not been able to walk through the streets of Omagh with President Bill Clinton.
She was speaking in Melbourne where she received an honorary degree from the University of Victoria.
Arrangements for her visit to Australia had been put in place before President Clinton announced his second trip to Ireland and it was not possible to change plans. She wrote to him apologising for her absence.
She said today that nobody had done more for peace in Northern Ireland than President Clinton.
President McAleese described his commitmment to Ireland as "extraordinary".
