Valuable lesson for society
NOBODY I know voted Yes to the Agreement did so because they wanted to see terrorists released. It is called realpolitiek. A necessary sacrifice for the greater good of peace and they would have been getting out soon anyway, or so we were told.
But that was not is not the point.
After Omagh we are reminded just how fragile are the rules and the unspoken conventions upon which civilised society is conducted.
The Agreement, by blurring the distinctions between right and wrong, by literally allowing murderers to get away with it. has so completely undermined the foundations of civil society that yet another group of political terrorists felt future concessions were available if the 'struggle' was continued.
After all, the week before the child killers of Omagh struck, the child killer of Mullaghmore was set free and over the next months we are expected to sit by and watch the very foundations of justice in our society further undermined.
However, society has the right to learn lessons, to change its mind and to reverse decisions democratically taken. Therefore it is now time for the release of convicted terrorists to stop: for decommissioning of every single ounce of explosives to begin: and for Gerry Adams MP to tell us if he still believes that the war is not over.
We have a right to know if a man who is preparing to sit in Government making decisions that affect our society actually believes that it is time for the war against that society to stop.
