Minister praises health teams
ULSTER'S new Health Minister John McFall last night praised all the medical staff who helped save lives in the aftermath of the Omagh atrocity.
In open letters to all the staff in the Health and personal Social Services and the chairmen of all the hospital trusts, he told of his deep gratitude.
Since Saturday the minister said he had spoken to survivors and relatives in Omagh, Enniskillen, Londonderry, Dungannon and Belfast.
He said the response by the medical staff across the country in the aftermath of the explosion had been "beyond description."
Survival
He said the staff at Tyrone County Hospital had ensured many of the injured were given the maximum chance of survival.
But for the sheer skill and professionalism of the medical staff, he said, the death toll would have been much higher.
In a letter to Richard Scott, Chairman of Sperrin Lakeland HSS Trust, he added: "The pressures on your staff were all the more intense as the injured came from your own community and included in many cases friends and relatives of staff on duty."
