We'll crush terrorists, vows Ahern
IRISH Prime Minister Bertie Ahern said last night his government had acted resolutely in the defence of democracy this week by drafting the most severe package of anti-terrorist measures in Ireland's history.
Mr Ahern, who unveiled what he called "draconian" new laws on Wednesday in response to the Omagh mass murder.
bombing, declared: "The decisions we announced can leave no doubt that we are determined to crush violence and suppress those who perpetrate it."
Mr Ahern, speaking in Co Mayo, added the pledge: "We shall not hesitate to use the powers to defend peace and democracy on this island against any who may persist in defying the will of the people of Ireland."
Mr Ahern, who will later today attend a commemoration in Omagh in memory of those who died in the blast, together with Irish President Mary McAleese, said the past week had been "a difficult, dangerous and tragic time"
