DAY THE FRESH AIR OF PEACE TURNED STALE
Day the fresh air of peace turned stale
THE horror has returned once again.
When we watch the news or read the paper a silence fills the room. It is a pitying, sad silence, a silence given in respect to our lost hope.
There was a time when hope lit up every face as the sun illuminates the horizon. Northern Ireland began to live. People began to breathe the fresh air of peace. The fear that burdened so many slowly began to lift. It finally ascended high into the sky and a warm, comforting dream took its place, a dream which seemed to be emerging with reality, a dream voiced by the strong Yes vote.
The dream was that the anguish and despair created by terrorism would no longer be experienced and that this island could be united in peace and prosperity.The romantic dream proved to be just that. A too idyllic future painted by our imagination. As we grew accustomed to our new way of life tragedy struck. It descended like a hammer and shattered the country which had been so delicately 'peaced' together.
