No words to describe their evil'
VEDA Short saw her newborn grandchild just hours before she died in the blast.
Mrs Short's grandson Lee was born on Saturday, and his proud grandmother saw him before she set off to work in an Omagh town centre shop.
At her funeral yesterday, the Rev Albin Rankin said there were no words to describe the evil action of the bombers who devastated Omagh.
"What makes it worse is that we are not alone," he said.
"Every part of Omagh grieves today as it did yesterday, as it will tomorrow and the day alter that. No words can ever give voice to such emotion."
But he said there were so many words to describe Mrs Short (56), a mother-of-four who died beside her colleagues.
She was, he said, "a lovely, kindhearted, generous person: a sincere and supportive friend; a willing and eager helper; a person who gave so much to so many, and asked for nothing in return."
Mr Rankin, a former minister at Seskinore Presbyterian Church where the funeral service for Mrs Short was held, recalled the last time he had seen her.
"As I shook her hand that night as she left the church, she whispered through the tears 'We're going to miss you'," he said.
"Little did either of us think that a few short weeks later, I would be here to whisper along with all who have gathered here 'We're going to miss you Veda."'
Veda Short is survived by her husband William and children Frances, Ian, Blaine and Alison. The family of Mrs Short have requested that no photographs of the funeral be published.
