Mowlam welcomes halt call to INLA

THE Secretary of State has welcomed a statement from the INLA's political wing that there is no longer any basis for "armed struggle".
"We hope very much the INLA will respond positively," said Mo Mowlam.
The statement was a direct response to the Omagh tragedy and called on all republican groups to end their campaigns of violence.
In a move that followed weeks of speculation that an INLA ceasefire was imminent, the IRSP said that in the light of the referendum and the clearly-expressed wishes of the people, there was no longer any basis for the "armed struggle".
The IRSP's Fra Halligan said an INLA decision could be expected shortly.
"It isn't a new thing, it's been going on for a long time," he said.
Meanwhile, the PUP's David Ervine has warned that the UVF ceasefire could be crumbling under the pressure of continued republican brutality.
"It's not the end of the ceasefire, but it's not all good news," he said.
