BLOOD DONORS URGED TO COME FORWARD
Blood donors urged to come forward
THE Northern Ireland Blood Transfusion Service today urged donors to come forward.
It expects to be able to cope with the immediate demand, but is concerned about stocks being run down.
"Fortunately at the time of the bomb we had a good stock of blood and we should be able to cope with the immediate demand
which the casualties will create." said Paul McElkerney from the service.
However, he said the emergency "would deplete stocks and it was vital that as many people as possible attended donation sessions
to rebuild stocks.
'"All types of blood will be needed but I would particularly appeal to any-one with O-negative blood to come forward, as our stock of this group will be exhausted," he said.
Mr McElkerney added donors should attend as early during sessions as possible.
Donations can be made today and tomorrow at Bangor, Omagh and at the Blood transfusion centre headquarters in the City Hospital, Belfast.
On Wednesday they will be held in Omagh and Newry, on Thursday at College Street in Belfast, in Strabane and in Newry and on Friday in Castlewellan, Stewartstown and Dunmurry.
